Different Words for Doll

I just thought I would share this with everyone. Whilst wandering around the world of Pinterest I have found that lots of times I'm stuck because who or want I want to search for is in French or Portugese for example. I kept coming across words that in the end turned out to be a word for DOLL in a different language. So over time I compiled a list for myself as a reference when I'm searching and here it is.

If it is any use to anyone, great and if I have got any wrong please tell me as it will help my wanderings around the web looking at other people's dolls.  I really love looking at other people's dolls. This is by no means an exhaustive list but just the Pinterest places I have found myself in, I would love anymore.

Tuesday Talent - Gvozdariki

 Gvozdariki is a Russian doll artist, animator and maker of wonderful mechanism, he also paints rather well.  But it is his dolls that capture my imagination.  Not traditional cloth dolls in any sense, they are cloth, clay, plaster & acrylic and have the most whistful of expressions.

Gvozdariki is the professional name of Vladimir Gvozdez, a graduate of The Russian Academy of Art and a native of Moscow.  His website is to be found at www.gvozdariki.ru and there you will find lots more of his original dolls as well as his mechanisms etc.

I find his world truly engaging, the settings of his dolls are magical and the detail is stunning.  Take a peek at his website, Google will translate it for you and wander around Gvozdariki's incredible imagination, its well worth it.

Gladys, all in browns with a vintage lace pinny

 This is Gladys, she is a Rhoda doll so stands 50cm tall, has a hand dyed calico body with a trim waist and large bottom! Her face is embroidered and she has soft fawn wool tops hair that is hand styled.

Her dress, underskirt and knickers are Tilda cotton lawn and she has a net underskirt for lift.  The net or tulle is very slippery but does lift the skirt nicely. She still has her stripy legs and scarf but I have added lace and ribbon detail to her dress.  I found the tinniest little buttons to complement the addition, they really are the smallest buttons I have ever seen at only 4mm.  Her dress also has a frill to the bottom, which I am unsure of and I added a tiny piece of vintage lace as a pinny.

The vintage lace came from our local vintage fair at Cedar Farm Gallery in Mawdesly on every second Sunday of the month.  The lady selling told me it was Edwardian and hand made, it certainly is very pretty and I have horded it for months.  Sometimes you just have to cut into something and use it or it will stay in your stash for years.  Well I was brave and now Gladys has an apron.  I hope you like her, let me know about the frill!

Tuesday Talent - HANDSHOUSE

 This week's Tuesday Talent introduces the joy that is HANDSHOUSE.  The dolls are simply elegant, cool blues and beige's in plain dresses and pinafores with the odd hand knit thrown in,

HANDSHOUSE dolls I think started out as straightforward Tilda style dolls, beautifully dressed but not uncommon however they have been reworked and reworked until this talented lady has something very much of her own. HANDSHOUSE dolls are made by
hyoeun yang, a young lady from Korea which surprised me.  My first thought on seeing them was France but it just goes to show, great things come from all over the world

hyoeun yang has a blog, its a nava blog and quite hard to get to and navigate, the best place to find pictures of these lovely ladies and gentlemen is on Pinterest.  hyoeun yang has her own pages of her work and inspirations, as well as pages about her home.  You get a great feel for her from these.

I just love her style, her colour palette and her choice of fabrics.  The simplicity of her dresses belie the skill it takes to make them.  Have a peep at her on Pinterest either as hyoeun yang or as HANDSHOUSE and enjoy her, as I do.

Tuesday Talent - Anna Yakushenko of Annysdolls

I just adore Tilda fabric and quite enjoy her books but lots of them are very samey but not the Tilda dolls of Annysdolls.  Taking the simple doll pattern of a standard Tilda doll this young lady makes quite stunning creations far removed from the everyday Tilda.

Anna Yakushenko is a doll maker from Brest in Belarus and really that is all I know.  She has one or two stunning dolls for sale on Etsy and plenty on livemaster.ru, she even has her own web pages at annysdolls.com.  The website is lovely with lots of beautiful dolls in lace and chiffon or with wonderful little hand knits, a delight for the senses but all in Russian so I cannot comment any further on her inspirations or ideas sadly.

The detail on these dolls is incredible, tiny hand knit socks and amazing cardigans & sweaters all teamed with old lace and pretty fabrics, each doll carries a hand embroidered token, a heart or little lavender bag. Retiring they aren't but I love the abundance of underskirts and ribbon details, quite a change from the more neutral colours you see around a lot.  Well something a little different, certainly a different way of dressing your basic Tilda doll, I hope you like them and have a peep at her website & enjoy.  All my warmest wishes from a very soggy Lancashire.

Hettie, A Pink Miss All in Teacups

 This is Hettie, a Rhoda Doll all pretty in pinks and pale browns.  As always she is made from tea dyed calico and has wool tops for hair and an embroidered face.  She sports a jaunty little crochet hat and has a stripy shawl & stripy legs. Again, as always, she has matching knickers and underskirt now with a net underskirt to give lift to the whole ensemble. The net is horrible to work with, so slippery but I think its worth it for the overall effect.

The fabric she is dressed in is from the Tilda Winter Memories range, Teacups - all the way back to Autumn/Winter 2012 would you believe.  Just before Christmas I was given all sorts of fat quarters in every colour imaginable, wool and lots of embroidery silks by a friend who wanted to declutter and disperse her stash with a downsizing house move in the offing.  Lots of friends received a very welcome New Year parcel with all kinds of goodies.  Hettie came about from this windfall, the fabric is lovely colours and Tilda fabric is always great to work with. Sometimes you just have to make something and Hettie was like that, I just wanted to use the fabric and she just had to have pink hair!

A Wonderful Doll Resource to Share

I don't know about you but not only do I make dolls, I love looking at other peoples dolls and as such am an avid Pinterest fan.  I am always on the look out for ideas for clothes particularly and use Pinterest a lot as a resource. If you don't use it have a peep at it, the premise is very simple and you can build an amazing online place for doll ideas and inspirations.

Now not only do I pin from others pin boards but I do like to find my own new dolls and spend an evening a week trawling around the internet for inspiration.  I have found a gem at www.livemaster.ru, what a resource for amazing dolls.  I follow a few blogs from out that way but this site is a treasure trove of dolls and doll costume,

My current favourites are the Tilda dolls that you find, the artists on livemaster.ru have taken Tilda to their hearts and made some amazing dolls, so beautifully dressed and so varied.  I love the layers of underskirts and the romantic feel of them.
